Dr. John Haller Medical Ledger, 1819-1832
Dr. John Haller was the first resident physician in Wytheville, Virginia. His medical ledger recorded information about medical services provided to men, women, and children, both free and enslaved, in Wythe County, Virginia. His ledger is an important resource for students, researchers, and community members interested in learning more about the histories of medicine and slavery in nineteenth-century Appalachia.
Directed by Dr. Anthony Guidone, this project has been funded by a Radford University SPGM seed grant and will last from January 2025-January 2026. The original ledgers are in the collections of the Wythe County Historical Society and Town of Wytheville Museums who are participating partners with the CADH. Project team members have digitized the full ledger, which can be viewed above, and are currently building a research index and dataset which will record the types of care, people treated, and financial information from Dr. Haller's medical practice.
